Style a Console Table Like a Design Pro
By Laura Carson Miller
Friends, are you looking to up your console table game in this new year?
A console table is one of the most versatile pieces of furniture in a home. Whether it’s in your entryway, behind a sofa, or against a wall, a well-styled console table can instantly elevate the look of your space. Here’s how to style it like your favorite interior design pros, so it’ll look right out of a design magazine or home & garden television show:
1. Start with a Focal Point
Choose a large piece to anchor your console table, such as a mirror, artwork, or a statement sculpture. This creates a visual centerpiece and adds height to your arrangement. I personally love to switch out a mirror or framed art above a console each season. This gives new excitement to the eye, especially in a foyer where you are coming in and out of you home each day. A great tip is move your art and mirrors around your home on a regular basis. This way your spaces are continually energized with new eye candy and you don’t have to spend money on new items.
2. Layer in Lighting
Table lamps or sconces add both function and ambiance. If space allows, opt for a pair of matching lamps for a balanced look or a single stylish lamp for an asymmetrical approach. There are so many cordless lighting options available now! A pair of small cordless lamps anchoring each end of a console is my favorite, and you can fill the space in between with the suggestions below.
3. Incorporate Decorative Objects
Use a mix of vases, bowls, candles, and small sculptures to add character and depth. Play with different heights and textures for a visually appealing setup. Small framed art on your console resting against the wall looks lovely with a mirror above. I like to use neutral art if it is an ornate or colorful mirror and colorful art if the mirror is very understated. Mixing and matching styles is a huge part of makes professional design so appealing.
4. Add Books or Magazines
A stack of books or magazines instantly adds sophistication and can be used as a base to elevate smaller decorative objects. Choose books with stylish covers that match your decor theme. If you want to display your books vertically instead of horizontally, a statement pair of bookends such as a geode style or something in an ornate metallic finish like a rose gold will really help your console table stand out wherever it is located.
5. Bring in Greenery
Plants or fresh flowers add a touch of nature and bring life to the space. A tall vase with branches or a small potted plant can make a big difference. I love brightly colored flowers on a foyer console table, particularly if the space has no windows and gets no natural light. A vase of red, yellow or orange flowers is welcoming when you come in the front door. Small plants in cache pots look modern. Research light needs before purchase for a console table. There are many low light plant options available.
6. Utilize Storage Solutions
If your console table has shelves or drawers, use decorative baskets or trays to keep things organized. This is a great way to store keys, mail, or other everyday essentials. Another wonderful use for your console table is to store extra seating such as upholstered cubes or x-benches underneath.
7. Maintain Balance
Balance is key in styling a console table. Mix tall and short pieces, symmetrical and asymmetrical elements, and light and dark tones for a harmonious composition. Most importantly, decorate with items you love and that have meaning for you. A small tray filled with matches from fave restaurants, framed photos or beautiful crystals will all spark joy each day.
Final Touches
Step back and assess your arrangement. Adjust elements as needed to ensure a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing look. A well-styled console table should feel curated yet effortless.
By following these tips, you can create a stylish and functional console table that enhances your home’s decor!
