Why You Need a Skin Serum

By Laura Carson Miller

Hello my friends…how have you been?

I wanted to write a bit about facial serums today, as in the last 6 months I’ve started using two new ones on a regular basis and I truly see a difference in my skin.

In the ever-expanding world of skincare, facial serums have emerged as a must-have product for anyone looking to achieve healthy, glowing skin. Here’s a closer look at the benefits of using facial skin serums and why they deserve a spot in your coveted daily skincare routine.

What Are Facial Skin Serums?

Facial serums are lightweight, fast-absorbing liquids packed with a high concentration of active ingredients. Unlike traditional moisturizers, serums penetrate deeply into the skin, delivering powerful nutrients directly to the skin cells. There are lots of serums on the market in all price ranges. Remember to look at the label to see where the active ingredients fall in the list and know that you don’t necessarily have to buy the mosr expensive options to get wonderful results!

The Benefits of Using Facial Serums

Now let’s understand why using a serum benefits your skin:

1. Deep Hydration

Many serums contain humectants like hyaluronic acid, which attract and retain moisture. This helps keep your skin plump, smooth, and well-hydrated throughout the day. These are especially helpful in the winter months!

There is an ingredient called Bidifda Ferment Lysate, which supports the skins natural barrier, reduces redness, dryness and sensitivity. It is in Lancôme’s Advanced Génifique, Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair and Dr. Dennis Gross DermInfusions Fill + Repair.

2. Targeted Treatment for Skin Concerns

The serums I’ve added to my skin care routine are a vitamn C formula and a peptide cocoction. They target different issues, as explained below and you don’t use the at the same time. I use a retinol from Musely, a subscription company. It has definitely improved the texture of my skin.

Serums are formulated to address specific skin concerns, such as:

  • Anti-aging: Ingredients like retinol and peptides help reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Brightening: Vitamin C and niacinamide enhance skin radiance and even out tone.
  • Acne Control: Salicylic acid and tea tree oil help combat breakouts and reduce inflammation.
  • Soothing Sensitivity: Aloe vera and centella asiatica calm irritation and redness.

3. Lightweight Yet Potent

Unlike heavier creams, serums are designed for quick absorption, making them ideal for layering under moisturizers and sunscreens. This ensures your skin receives the necessary nutrients without feeling greasy or heavy.

4. Enhances Skin Texture and Tone

Regular use of serums can lead to improved skin texture, as I mentioned above, minimized pores, and a more even complexion. Exfoliating ingredients like alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) help slough off dead skin cells, revealing fresher, smoother skin.

5. Boosts the Effectiveness of Other Skincare Products

By preparing the skin with essential nutrients, serums can enhance the absorption and performance of other skincare products in your routine, such as moisturizers and sunscreens.

How to Use a Facial Serum

To get the most out of your serum:

  1. Cleanse: Start with a clean face to remove dirt and oil. I do a double cleanse each night, but a little differently than the standard. I use a micellar water to remove my tinted SPF moisturizer, blush and tinted brow gel, then I cleanse with LaRoche-Posay Gentle Foaming Cleansing Oil. I dry my face with a Clean Skin Club Clean Towel. I then use Burt’s Bee Witch Hazel & Rose toner on a cotton pad, let it dry then apply my serum and moisturizer.
  2. Apply a Few Drops: A little goes a long way – these are concentrated formulas – apply a few drops to your fingertips and gently press into your skin.
  3. Follow with Moisturizer: Lock in the benefits by applying a moisturizer afterward.
  4. Use Daily: For best results, use your serum consistently, either in the morning, evening, or both, depending on the formulation.

Facial serums are a game-changer in skincare, offering deep hydration, targeted treatments, and improved skin health. By incorporating the right serum into your routine, you can achieve radiant, youthful-looking skin with minimal effort. Whether you’re a skincare novice or a seasoned enthusiast, adding a facial serum to your regimen is a step toward healthier, more vibrant skin!
